Lemurs, Forests, and People: Building Sustainable Forest Communities in Madagascar

Travis Steffens has a BSc in Primatology and a Masters in Anthropology from the University of Calgary and a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology from the University of Toronto. Specializing in primate conservation biogeography and applied conservation, Travis has been involved in primate research since 2002. He has conducted research projects on endangered primates in Belize, Central America, and Madagascar.

In 2015, Travis founded Planet Madagascar, a Canadian non-profit organization, to work towards building sustainable forest communities in Madagascar. He combines his research with practical conservation measures to protect lemurs and their habitat and to improve the livelihoods of people who live in connection with lemurs. In addition to his role as Executive Director, he is a member of the organization’s Board of Directors.

Travis is also an International Fellow in the Explorers Club and is the current Regional Director for Ontario and Nunavut.
