Francine M.G. McCarthy (BSc, PhD Dalhousie U., MSc U. of Toronto)

The natural archive at Crawford Lake has many stories to tell, recording human activity since the 13th century. Its proposal as the Anthropocene* ‘golden spike’ caused an ongoing international ‘kerfuffle’ – find out why! Join us for this engaging talk led by Francine McCarthy, Professor of Earth Sciences and Member of the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre at Brock University / Research Associate-Natural History, Plants and Climate at the Royal Ontario Museum.
Francine McCarthy is a micropaleontologist who is interested in paleoenvironmental reconstruction, primarily using acid-resistant organic walled microfossils – pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs. Her research has spanned small lake to abyssal marine environments and everything in between, primarily at mid-latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. Her interdisciplinary research has been conducted in collaboration with several geologists, biologists, geographers, and archeologists from government, university, and the private sector. She has been on the executive of several organizations, including current membership on the board of the Canadian Association of Palynologists and membership on the International Association for Great Lakes Research.
*Anthropocene is a term that has been used to refer to the period of time during which humanity has become a planetary force of change.
