“High Technology Used to Create Affordable Ways of Reducing the Threat of Accidents and Illness”

Geoff Fernie is a biomedical engineer whose passion is the research for practical solutions to common problems of daily living for an aging population, people with disabilities and their caregivers.

Geoff led a team that built the most advanced simulators in the world capable of realistically reproducing challenging environments. He will show us how these simulators have been used to find practical solutions to reduce accidents. Topics will include safer winter footwear, safer stairs & bathrooms, and understanding the effects of drowsiness and drugs on driving. Geoff will also show how his research has resulted in a new way to reduce more than 100,000 deaths that occur every year in North America from infections caught while in hospital.

The overall theme is high technology leading to affordable practical solutions to common serious problems that threaten us all.
