Dr. Teresa (Terry) Bennett, MD, FRCPC, PhD

Assistant Professor, McMaster University; Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, Offord Centre for Child Studies; Co-Director, McMaster Autism Research Team

“Learning from Children and Families Affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Dr. Bennett’s clinical and research interests focus on developmental psychiatry: understanding risk and protective factors for optimal child mental health and development, and how prevention and “timely intervention” programs can help children, youth and families on their life pathways.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – what causes it, how we treat it and why it seems to be on the rise – is a popular, and often controversial, health and science topic in the media. ASD refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. Autism’s most obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age although in some cases as early as 18 months. The prevalence of autism in Canadian children is now estimated to be 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.

Dr. Bennett will share some updates on the understanding of ASD, from a gene-to-brain-to-family-to-neighbourhood approach. She will also share some of the lessons she has learned from the children and families with whom she works, and how this has informed her views and experience of diversity, acceptance and wonder as a physician, parent and citizen.
